The big leap live (years 7 & 8)
Overview
We get students excited by 'The Big Leap' they can make in their life. They get to indulge themselves of how their life might be if they focus and take themselves more seriously.
This two hour event is hugely interactive - teachers are always worried about their students being in 'one place' for two hours - don't be!!
You want students to.....
- Focus on life and school.
- Understand the things they need to do to be successful in life.
- Know what drives them in their life and be able to take control.
- Understand that phrases like "dunno" might not be helping them get to where they want to be in the world!!!
- Understand how they can be better at listening and communicating - we show them some really cool techniques that will definitely help them.
- Take total responsibility not just for their schooling but everything they do in their life and not make excuses.
- Recognise that they can't get everything NOW and that the things most valuable in life might actually take time.
- Be brave enough to make mistakes and learn from them.
- Change their own habits and not have YOU constantly telling them.
- Open up, share their experiences and make commitments about how they'll change their behaviour.
- Find out their 'BIG WHY' in their life and know what it is they're aiming for.
The ending of the event is tied-in with them completing their own 'My Big Why' goal card (which we send to them one month later) - this is because we know schools want some kind of longevity and real impact for their students.
In more detail:
Hi-impact TM Communication, surely the most important skill in life which Keith and Michael are both expert in.
Students get to find out just how important communication is and the engagement techniques that will help them become better at listening and making friends in life. Teachers complain about students' lack of engagement and this gets them to practice some new life-changing behaviours.
Motivaction TM We all know that we have different things that 'drive us' and make us ambitious or hungry. But, motivation only ever makes a difference when it is coupled with action. That is why we call it 'motivaction'!!
It's at this point in the session we use a variety of techniques to understand what really drives us. They get to realise that what seems like fun now won't necessarily mean they'll have fun in the future. It's emotional and it gets personal. They start to look inwards and not outwards.
Bravezone TM Students think that by making excuses, it shifts the responsibility....it doesn't!!
They get to recognise that they are in control of themselves all of the time. Students get to realise that making mistakes will be their biggest learning, if they use it to positive effect. This is a brilliant exercise and we think you'll like how we get there!
Futuredrive TM Whilst young people are very creative and imaginative, they seem to lack imagination when it comes to thinking seriously about themselves. This section is all about visualising their success.
Dare to dream TM We get them to think about how they want to live and who they want to be. This is serious and very powerful stuff. This is not just a 'good talk'; this is the real thing - they now get to put some of this 'dreaming into action'. This is the bit they've never done before; they get to work out where they want to be in their life. To make this 'real' they then complete a goal setting card called 'My Big Picture'. They even get to work out how much "extra" schoolwork they need to do in order to get what they want!!
They always find this bit quite 'hard' and yet they always find it 'useful'!
.....to reinforce this we send 'My Big Picture' to their home address one month after the event!!
Teachers love this because......
- It's not teachers telling them, it's them telling themselves (their own ideas in their own handwriting!)
- It's a very unsubtle reminder that they need to focus on their schoolwork.
We call of these modules 'The Big Leap LIVE'.
